Interview with Ken Davy

General Questions

1] Are you married
A] Yes I have been married to Jennifer for 43 years.

2] Do you have children?
A] Yes 4 daughters

3] What car do you drive?
A] An S. Type Jaguar, diesel to help the environment.

4] Where were you born?
A] Bridlington, I was brought up in Filey and the family moved to Huddersfield when I was away at sea aged 18.

Specific Questions

1] I would like to say a personal THANKS for saving my club but two questions spring to mind: - You talk of ambition to be a top 30 club by 2008, this is now not a realistic outlook due to recent performances but all we want as Town fans is to see some proof of AMBITION - if you are unable to fund any further signings (that are clearly needed)etc....can you not seek/have you tried any further investment?
A] We have far from given up the goal of being a top 30 club. It may be more challenging now as we have had 2 seasons in this division. The first season we missed the playoffs by a point, the second season we missed out on Cardiff. The board offered to provide further funds last Christmas to ensure that we achieved promotion. Peter Jackson had confidence in his squad to do the job. We have also offered funding for loans lately but again Jacko is confident his squad will be able to do the job for us. WE understand that this may be reconsidered in January.

2] I realise a statement re finances has already been made but questions are still unanswered/unclear by a majority of the fans such as just what do Town own/have shares in re the stadium / KSDL etc.... this to me is of most concern-do we have any assets at all (bar players) and if not WHY? and is it true that Giants have 40% in the stadium?
A] All answers to these questions were provided in my statement made on the 30th September I have nothing to add to this. It is nonsense to suggest that the majority of fans are concerned about any of these matters. I stand by all the information provided then. My wife and I have plenty we are able to do on a Saturday afternoon.

3] Whilst Jacko was the right man at the time to take us forward we have not progressed in my opinion for the last 12 months - he is tactically naive, he also failed to see when others saw that we also needed pace in the side - why did we give him an extended contract in the summer (particularly as our season collapsed so dramatically at the end of last season) as we are now unable to pay him off even if you wanted to?
A] We do believe that Jacko has the ability to take the club forward. Whenever we are looking at a particular game then there are plenty of opportunities to criticise, however we have to make the overall judgement in the context of the club as a whole. I am certain the board have made the best judgement in respect of supporting Andrew and Peter.

4] Do you consider that official supporters groups have any cooperative role to play with the Club, other than in the Development Association? If not, why not?
We support ALL the supporter groups as best we can always, attending meetings and so on. The Development Association is the body with the role of representing all supporter groups. It is impractical to favour one group over another. Under the experienced guidance of George Binns , whose longstanding commitment to Huddersfield Town is unquestionable, the Development Ass. is well placed to represent all groups. The development Association minutes are considered in full at every board meeting.

5] Are there any plans to offer shares for sale to supporters? If so, when and on what basis? If not, why not?
A] No plans there is no need.

6] Sean Jarvis was recognised for the hard work he put in at Oldham whilst they were a sinking ship, and formed a key part of a potential management buy out back-up plan should the Norwegian bid to take them over at the time fall through. With club debt seemingly rocketing and attendances likely to fall significantly next season should we be in League 1 or League 2, do you see Sean’s role at Town as similar to the one he had at Oldham...i.e., is he tasked with steering the club away from the ice-berg it seems to be heading towards, and if he fails in that, is his secondary role one of repositioning the club with new owners?"My personal feeling is that Jarvis' appointment signifies that Davy has run out of ideas - lost faith in Watson and wants someone to turn things around Is this true?
A] No! I would not accept that Town is heading towards any form of crisis at all. The crisis point was administration in 2003. There was a real possibility that the club would cease to exist. Sean’s role is one of raising the overall core income and the profile of both clubs and the stadium. Both clubs benefit form the success of each other as does the stadium as a whole. All indications are that a significant difference is being made building on a very fine foundation built up over the last three years by Andrew, Ann Hough and their team.

7] What is the process for requesting funds for a player?
A] Jacko and Andrew Watson work closely together on all footballing needs. If they feel that there is a requirement than Andrew approaches the Board with a proposition. Equally the Board may suggest that there is a requirement for funds. I can understand that it is important for the current squad to be given the opportunity for the current squad to win their spurs in the fullest senses of the word and to demonstrate their ability to take the club forward. The reality is we just missed the playoffs by a point and just missed out on Cardiff last season. In the closed season we made 2 significant signings. The board can fully understand why Jacko has the confidence that he has in his current squad when they are fit and available.

8] What info does the Manager/Coach have to provide the back up their request?
A] Whenever changes are proposed they must be presented to the board properly and in full detail.

9] What pressure to become qualified to national standards do you place upon your coaching staff
A] We encourage all coaching staff to maximise their qualifications fully. John Dungworth has all qualifications already and Jacko is going through the process of updating his qualifications to ensure that we have as wide a knowledge base as possible.

10] Who is in charge of personal development for non-playing staff.
A] Andrew Watson is in charge of both aspects now that his focus is entirely on the football side. The board have overall responsibility with Ann and Shaun putting recommendations forward and following up actions.

11] What would success be this season? Better than last? Losing in the play-off final?
A] Promotion this season remains our absolute goal. The reality is that so far this season the results have been disappointing. We have had some good wins, but also we have had some unexpected losses. We are still only a few points off the playoffs and the gap to automatic promotion places is not that huge, We do need to be further up the table. We are making every effort to ensure promotion is a reality unfortunately in sport there are no guarantees.

12] It would seem that we are one of only a couple of clubs in League 1 who have used no loan signings so far this season. There seems to be an air of depression and crowds have fallen. Given the injuries and suspensions affecting the squad, especially recently, would it not seem prudent to consider allowing the manager to bring in one or two loan signings? Surely loan signings would pay for themselves by generating interest, improving performances and therefore boosting crowd numbers?
A] That is a fair point which is why the Board have been prepared to support loans. Peter is confident that at the present time when his squad is fully available and this judgement remains his. January is the optimum time to reconsider our stance on this.

13] Why do the Town no longer own any shares in the Stadium and the giants do? What benefit do Town get from playing in the stadium because of this when previously we could make money from any concerts, internationals etc which were played there.
A] Please see my answer to question 2.

14] Why has the rent we pay spiralled to such levels?
A] Again see question 2’s answer.

15] Why is there no money available what so ever for loan signings for our fragile squad? Other teams such as Bradford are using this all the time.
A] already answered in a previous question.

16] The football we are playing is so dire, even the die hard fans are becoming bored, its an entertainment business and we are not being entertained, is he concerned about this?
A] We all want to see entertaining football, but it is more important to win matches! We want to achieve promotion. It has been left to the manager and his team to determine the most effective way of achieving this result. In an ideal world we would have entertaining football and victories.

17] Why are the clubs finances not transparent if they have nothing to hide?
A] See the answer to question 2.

18] Is Jacko going to be given money to be spent in the January transfer market?
A] The focus I anticipate will be loans rather than transfers but this will be up to Jacko.

19] As most Town fans come from outside Huddersfield, with a significant proportion in the Heavy Woollen District, where Huddersfield, apart from Town, has very negative connotations, do you think linking the Giants with Town under the banner Sporting Pride of Huddersfield is ill judged?
A] No Huddersfield Town is a stand alone Football Club and it’s position as a football club remains unchanged. We are trying to achieve for Kirklees greater success and recognition as a whole. Sport in the community is important. The original vision for the stadium was that all three elements would move forward together. It is absolutely clear that greater success for each individual element achieves benefits for the others. For example; Every extra supporter that the giants have reduces the rent for Huddersfield Town.

20] Do you realise that despite appearances the majority of fans support you and appreciate the help you have given to Town?
A] The vast majority of feedback and comments from the vast majority of Town fans are outstandingly good. It is disappointing in the extreme that a small minority seem to be obsessed with matters unrelated to football. This minority seem equally unable to accept the truth of the statement that I and the club made. They insist on creating an atmosphere which is potentially damaging to Huddersfield Town Football Club.

21] Do you have a message for the fans?
A] We all want success for Huddersfield Town. In particular we all want to see us winning matches and achieving promotion. I believe that the fans, the Manager and the Board are united in that objective. At the present time results have not been anywhere near as encouraging as we would have hoped at the start of this season. However all of us are determined to try to ensure the 2nd half of the season brings us closer to achieving our goals. Unfortunately there are no guarantees in any sport. Myself and the Board are determined to do everything possible whilst we recognise the absolute need to ensure the stability of the club is never put at risk again.
