Interview with Paul Bane 20-02-20021] Where were you born?
A] Essex
2] How old are you?
A] 46
3] Are you married?
A] Yes
4] Three children
A] Four
5] Why did you start supporting Town?
A] I have always been interested in football and used to attend various clubs down south on my own. When I moved up to this area with my job a friend at work attended Huddersfield regularly and invited me along. This was 1988. I was hooked almost straight away and have been a keen Town fan ever since.
6] Which footballer did you most admire as you were growing up, and why?
A] George Best, he was magic to watch!
7] Which footballer do you most admire now, and why?
A] David Beckham. After all he has been through. Everyone slated him for his past mistakes but he owned up to what he did as stupid. He only wants to play football and be with his family, He obviously loves football to death.
8] What was your best footballing moment?
A] Going up and Wembley and becoming part of Town!
9] What car do you drive?
A] A Lexus
10] Which teams have you supported in the past?
A] In 1965 I was due to go abroad. My brother and I were watching the FA cup final. He wanted a team to win, so I chose Liverpool and should for them. From then on I called myself a Liverpool supporter. I attended quite a few games and have always been interested in their progress. Apart from them, Town of course now through and through.
11] Do you honestly think Town will get promotion this season?
A] Yes I really hope they will and they are capable of doing it.
12] Are you on the Internet? If so would you consider joining the Huddersfield Town list?
A] Yes in the future, with my job and Town I really don’t have enough time right now.
13] What is your background before you became a Town investor/Director?
A] Various jobs mainly on the finance side of businesses.
Specific Questions
1] Are you fully settled in Huddersfield Town yet?
A] It takes time to get to know everyone and I am on the shy side so no, but I am getting there.
2]. How much debt did Barry Rubery leave HTAFC with?
A] Nothing near the figure often quoted. All the details will be available in the accounts.
3]. There are rumours and suggestions that any debt was cleared as part of the takeover deal: is this true?
A] No it’s not true.
4] Do you agree that having the Town fans on your side is essential to the future of HTAFC? With this in mind, would you consider operating an "open book" accounts system, so the fans can see the "problem" and the effect their "support" is having?
A] Yes definitely always. You cannot have completely open book due to the confidentiality of wages contracts etc.
5] How do you feel about ex HTAFC board members being members of public mailing list forums debating Huddersfield Town 'issues', when there is no visible member of the current regime present? (Despite promises to 'become one with the fans').
A] I have no problem with this. We have nothing to hide and we all want the best for the future of Huddersfield Town.
6] If I were to give £1m to the club as a gift, what would you do with it?
A] Strengthen the current squad would think. We are still looking for backers.
7] Please can turn the match commentary in the toilets off. It is very unnerving.
A] I wasn’t aware of this and I will promise to look into it.
8] You’ve announced as a board that the current wage bill is too high for the 2nd division. BUT - is it too high for the 1st division?
A] Yes it is right now.
9] Is there scope to bring in some new faces?
A] At the moment no.
10] Could you ask The Director how much attention he pays to the opinions of the fans (whether it be by websites, papers, mailing lists or what-not). If he doesn't personally read or listen, does anyone relay the opinions on to him, and does he react to them.
A] A lot please feel free to write to me, your input as fans is vital to the club.
11] Also, does he look at the www.htafc.com website?
A] I look at every website I can find including Down at the Mac, the Huddersfield Net, htfc-world, from the terrace and the club website.
12] Do you have any reservations about the current squad size injuries etc.?
A] The lads we have are good enough! We need a few more in case of injuries to key players.
13] How much information did you have before you decided to be committed to the football club.
A] Hardly any, I just wanted to get involved; this is a dream come true for me.
14] Where have you made your money to be able to put so much into Huddersfield Town
A] From work and working very long hours.
15] How do you get on with the other 3 directors seeing as you have only known them for 3 months (assuming that you did not know them before the consortium)
A] We get on very well. We have a good balance between us, Geoff and David are from the old school and Paul and I are the youngsters. We all want the same thing too which helps.
Have you got a message for the Worldwide Fans?
Please keep supporting us in whatever way you can. Stick with us. Town is very important to us too.
I like Paul and Paul’s attitude very much. I also like where he is coming from when he talks about Town. He admits he has a lot to learn about running a football club but is prepared to learn in whatever way he can. I for one am glad he is on the board, He is also as obsessed as the rest of us, which can’t be a bad thing in my opinion. By Jeanne Brown. |
