Interview with Efetobore Sodje 16-10-2003How old are you? b] How is your surname pronounced
a 31 b] So jay!
Date of birth? Place of birth?
05/10/72 Greenwich, London
Are you married or with a long term partner?
Married to Doctor Susannah Sodje
Do you have any children?
A girl aged 12 years.
Which teams have you played for in the past? (Did the fans all wear Bandanas?)
Stevenage, Macclesfield, Luton, Colchester and Crewe. (Yes most did)
Who is the hardest opponent you have ever faced?
Many but I would have to say Nathan Blake
Which is your most memorable game and why?
When I made my league debut for Macclesfield I scored. It was also the first ever goal scored by Macclesfield in the football league!
Which game would you rather forget and why?
Too many I would wish to forget (smiling)
How do you like having Peter Jackson as manager?
(chuckling) he's a nightmare, no seriously he's a great guy and always cracking jokes and he is so very passionate!
Are you on the Internet?
Yes but I am going to have to change my email address, I currently have 3000 mails to download and not time to sort them out.
Do you work through an agent or are you independent?
I don't currently have an agent. I engage one when the need arises only
Is Yorath a good Coach?
Yes, no doubt about it he knows just what he is doing
What is best about having he as coach?
He is basically strict. IF he say he wants you to do ten minutes at something he means he wants 100% for that ten minutes.
What is his worst fault?
He loves his running too much (Smiling)
What do you think of Huddersfield Town?
It is a massive club far too big and good to be in division three. Fingers crossed for two next year!
How have the fans treated you since you arrived?
I really can't complain they have been unbelievable to me. Even before I played they were welcoming me.
Are you settling in well?
Fine. I have to come up form Cheshire all the time and sometimes get the train but sometimes I drive up.
Where do you think Town will end up this season?
Automatic Promotion! We may hit a bad spot soon but if the fans stick with us we will storm ahead after that.
What car would you own if money were no object? What do you drive now?
I love the car that I have (an X5) but maybe a Bentley Convertible.
Have you thought about what to do when your footballing career is over?
I am doing a business course now in business management
Bobbie Robson has just been made Nigerian Manager; do you expect to be playing for your country again?
I would love to. Bobbie is a great appointment for the Country and an excellent manager. I would hope he comes to see me and picks me, because I hope to play.
a]Do you always wear a bandana? b] What is your hair like underneath? c] Why do you wear a bandana?
a] Yes always b] Trade secret I'm not answering that one! c] My mother asked me to I don't know why she did )I said probably because it suits him so much)
What is your favourite football ground in this country and why?
Manchester City, Maine Road, I have never had a bad game there yet
What is your least favourite football ground and why?
I have played in every league now and none in particular.
Do you get commission on the bandanas that Town sell?
No but I am hoping to get one for my charity.
Why did you come to Huddersfield instead of going to a first or second division club? There are those who think you'd be a big fish in a small pond or that there were problems at your last club, are any of these rumours true?
When I was invited to go to the World Cup the Crewe manager told me that if I went he was going to release me. I went and he did. As I had a contract for two years no-one knew I was available until late. I was just myself at Crewe and just myself after the World Cup. No one knows all this but you have my permission to use it. Jacko came in and showed me around and he was so passionate and the Stadium and set-up was fantastic so I came to Huddersfield. I can start at the bottom and go up again here.
How different have you found it here to Nigeria and other parts of Africa?
Too cold here (and then I came up here to Huddersfield which is even colder (Laughing)) . Nigeria will always be home.
Do you have any relationship with John Fashanu?
Yes we have been friends for sometime but I haven't seen him for a couple or three months.
Do you fancy doing a sponsored 'goatee beard shave' for the club?
I would love to but it would take too long to grow back (laughing)
How do you rate our current squad (made up of many young players) and do you think we have the strength in depth to have a chance of promotion?
We have a good side. Any new players coming in can adapt well too so we have the strength in depth we need. We have some great players here.
If football had not been your choice what do you think you would be doing now instead?
Something with kids, Business Management running my own business or may be I could be a model (smiling)
Have you got a message for the fans on the WWW?
Keep on doing exactly what you are doing. You will then deserve the victory of promotion at the end of the season.
Sodje is a lovely gentleman. He is polite and well spoken and very straightforward. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this interview (even though he was sat in the back of my car to do the interview straight after training because no-one had told him I was coming to interview him lol) He is a tease and quite entertaining to talk to. He is very happy with Huddersfield and was thrilled to hear that the fans loved him too. By Jeanne Brown. |
