Interview with Peter Jackson 15-12-2003How old are you?
42
Date of birth? Place of birth?
6.4.61. Born in Bradford
Are you married or with a long term partner?
Married to Allison
Do you have any children?
Oliver is 16 and Charlotte is 20
Which teams have you played for in the past?
Bradford twice, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Chester, Halifax and Huddersfield reserves.
Who is the hardest opponent you have ever faced?
Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish, the most physical Billy Whitechurch
Which is your most memorable game and why?
As a manager it has to be my first win against Stoke, when we won 2-1 and Dalton took the ball form the half way line and scored.
Which game would you rather forget and why?
Barnsley 7-1 uggh
How do you like having Peter Jackson as manager?
Excellent, I love managing Huddersfield it has to be the best thing ever.
Are you on the Internet?
No.
Do you work through an agent or are you independent
I am independent
Is Yorath a good Coach?
Excellent the best, it helps that we are best friends too.
What is best about having him as coach?
It has to be his experience as a player and a coach.
What is his worst fault?
He makes me drink too much at times (smiling)
What do you think of Huddersfield Town as a club?
As it is now, It's my club always. I am desperate to bring success to this club.
How have the fans treated you since you arrived back?
Brilliant. (apart from the odd one or two you always get.) I would say it was the fans support that brought me back as Manager. When you lose six games in a row and then get 10.000 fans chanting your name the following week at home it's pretty special.
Did you settle back in well?
Fantastic. I'm not as young or as new to the job as I was last time.
Where do you think Town will end up this season?
If we can sort the way form out we will be up there. I have achieved my first aim making the MacAlpine a fortress again, now to work on the way form more!
What car would you own if money were no object? What do you drive now?
Cl500 Mercedes, I have the baby version now.
If money were no object which player would you bring in to Town?
Probably Roy Keane, or perhaps Micheal Owen.
Who decides the tactics and team shape before the game ... you or Taff?
Me always, I do take Taff's views into account.
Who decides the tactical changes during a game ... you or Taff?
We discuss it but the final decision is always mine.
What was the thinking behind playing a back four at Lincoln consisting of 4 centre halves?
I would say it was more three centre backs. The reason was they are a big physical side. They were likely to subject us to an aerial bombardment.
You have done as you said and made it fortress McAlpine which is a great achievement compared to last year....how are we going to turn it around away from home?
I don't know to be sure. We prepare right, travel to games the night before. We seem to lack confidence and concentration at away games. We are working on it. We are eighth on our home form if we could have sorted our away games out (even if only a little) we would be at least third.
Its great to see the team playing with conviction. Have you spoken to players about going that bit too far in terms of indisipline and how do you plan to get discipline back under control?
It's a fine line between passion and indisipline. If you take away to passion you can lose the will to win. We are not really a dirty team and at least two of the red cards were wrong decisions, I feel. We are competitive but not dirty. If you took the passion out of Fowler you would lose him as the player being as good as he is for example.
When is he going to admit he is wrong re the fact that Nat Brown is a far better Right Wing Back than a Forward?
After another two games. When Nat proves he can be consistent. We all know he can do it but he needs to do it every match.
You could ask him if he imposes any restrictions when interviewed for radio. If he does, why? If not, is the interviewer free to take him up on his comments?
No it's always a free for all as it is with you. I am always honest and answer whatever is asked, No , no problems with that at all ever.
All three goals against Hull were the result of defensive errors. Whilst taking nothing away from the performance on Saturday,he did not mention this in his after match comments, which contrasted with his comments after the Lincoln game where he was at pains to point out that the goals conceded were results of poor defending on our part. Do you think this is consistent
Pressure from us made them make the mistakes, if you look at the goals, we made the goals. At Lincoln we made defensive mistakes and lost concentration..
If Senior is as good as he is building him up to be, now that he is the only proper keeper who is fit (no disrespect to Lee Martin), why did he see fit to drop him at the beginning of the season?
We needed another keeper anyway and Ian has much more experience as a keeper. Because Ian will be out for about six weeks Phil. Now has the chance to claim the spot for himself.
If Town do not at least make the playoffs, would he consider that he had failed in his job?
Disappointed no. Look at Hull they have been together three years and have spent millions of pounds. If you look at what we have achieved so far after only six months I am proud of the lads.
Has he considered watching part of the game from the stand (as Mel Machin used to)?
I once tried it for ten minutes and it's not for me (Laughing) I do not want a touchline ban for that reason (I will probably end up with one though before long)
Why do you send the 5 chosen substitutes out at 1/2 time, during which time you presumably given a team talk and instructions for the second half to the first 11. Surely the 5 players concerned are potentially only one moment away from needing to know any changes of tactics you may have decided on during the first 45 minutes.
Basically to keep them warm, give them a feel of the pitch and the ball. I always make sure they know what is happening in the second half first. If I am making a sub. immediately after half time I pull that person off straight away
Where do you realistically see HTAFC as being in 3 years time?
I would be disappointed if we hadn't achieved at least one promotion.
Do you think your and Terry Yorath's appearance acts for or against you when negotiating with the less well endowed (in a hair sense) Ken Davy?
Hahaha , no he is a businessman.
How often do you have to report to the board?
Once a month unless there is a problem. If there is a problem they are available at all times.
What's the WORST thing about being manager of HTAFC?
Saturday nights if we get beaten. I can't eat, sleep or anything.
Have you considered that your passion from the touchline may be having a detrimental effect on team discipline?
I don't think it does. I think enthusiasm is important.
When will the players you brought in on 1 year contracts begin negotiations to be extended or not? Will it be before the end of the season?? Some of the players whose contracts are reaching their ends could have their eye on getting a move and might not 'give their all' for Town in the critical part of the season?
There are some young players I am considering offering new contracts too already. Gone are the days when we could offer two and three year contracts and yes, we take the risk of losing players but it's necessary now. Some may be March or April before I offer them a new contract.
Which, if any, player you have brought in has performed better than you expected?
Tony Carrs, Gray and Sodje at times. Worthington is coming on leaps and bounds from the youngsters.
Why is there never a Huddersfield Town team entered into the Sky Sports 'Masters' tournaments?
Because they tend to pick Premiership or First division clubs is the simple answer to that one.
Please ask Jacko the current situation re Jon Worthington and the Club's appeal. Many people have contacted the FA about this and I am willing to coordinate a petition with national coverage to ask for some answers. The FA's unwillingness to answer for its actions is not acceptable.
I am not allowed to take this any further by the rules of the FA. I am still astonished about this decision. I can understand the referee in the heat of the moment issuing a red card, but not after being faced with the repeated video evidence following the game. It is a big thing for clubs to put in an appeal. It takes many hours and costs money. I can honestly say that following this I may never send in another one. I have absolutely no objection at all to a petition.
Do you still consider yourself the sexiest manager in football, even now Dennis wise is the new millwall boss? And how much does he spend on hair products in a week?
I am never going to escape that one am I. All I said was I was better looking than Peter Reid and John Rudge at that time. But yes I am (laughing)
Have you got a message for the fans on the WWW?
I can only say KEEP THE FAITH!
Peter Jackson is what you see is what you get. He is passionate about Town, loves the club with a passion that matches most fans or even surpasses it. He is very down to earth and honest. If caring , enthusiasm and passion can win games we would be at the top of the premiership in four years! I doubt that Town will ever find a manager who cares more about the club or results or would try more to achieve them for us. I love having Peter as a Manager, I wanted him back and I, for one amongst many, am proud to have him as our manager. PETER JACKSON'S BARMY ARMY for me for a long time to come. By Jeanne Brown. |
