Huddersfield 5 - 0 MK Dons League 1 18-02-2006What a difference a week makes in football, 3 games, 3 wins, 3 clean sheets,
9 points, add another + 8 to the goal difference and a thumping 5-0 win at
home.
After loosing at Tranmere where we looked out of sorts and pretty much like
sliding out of the promotion race, the lads responded in the best possible
way with 3 on the bounce.
In a game where we just had to win, Town served a first half display of
fluent, attacking sexy football, not seen for some time. A match where the
forwards may have been licking their lips in anticipation, not one of the
scored but certain Graham and Booth caused lots of problems and were both
unlucky not add to the Dons misery.
Town opened the scoring from the most unlikely of sources, veteran centre
back Martin McIntosh swept the ball home after some great work in the box
from the impressive Captain John Worthington. I should have stuck with my
instincts and had a bet on him being 1st goal scorer! 1-0 soon became 2,
Gary Taylor Fletcher rounding off and fantastic flowing move with a far post
header on the end of Smith curling cross.
Town all but sealed the points before the break when the non stop David
Graham intercepted indecision from the MK keeper and rounded him at the edge
of box, rather than being greedy and going for goal, Graham picked out
Worthington on inside the 6 yard box and it was 3-0, simply, effective,
decisive!
The word, game of 2 halves is often used in football and during long periods
of the second, that's what we were thinking as Town again switched off at
the start of the latter period and were lucky to see the ball just over the
bar from a free header. Maybe that was a little wakeup call? Maybe not as
it was the Dons who started playing some football and Town looked to have
switched off.
Town kept the clean sheet they deserved and eventually got back into the
game and started to push forward looking for another goal. Fletcher had
gone off at half time with a knee injury, contract rebel Schofield replacing
him on the right wing. The 2nd half effort was ended when David Mirfin
connected to knock home a late 4th and get the crowd lifted again.
Holdsworth for Worthington who had been booked and Abbott for Booth were
subs made by Jacko as Town pressed on. The final act came from young
Michael Collins after another great flowing passing move from Town with some
unselfish play from Abbott and Brandon for the academy graduate to smash
home the 5th and Town biggest win of the season.
Good day at the office, a nice warm up for next Fridays Live tv match at
Swansea!
