Bournemouth 1 - 2 Huddersfield League 1 20-01-2007I made the journey down from London to the fleshpots of Bournemouth as
I haven't seen Town much this season, and believe it or not this was
one of the most reachable away games left.
Quite an encouraging game, albeit against limited opposition.
Bournemouth would appear to be as doomed as Brentford. I was glad to
see Beckett named in the starting 11 as I was not looking forward to
another 4-5-1 away from home snorefest. And I don't know whether it
was the weather conditions which influenced the thinking (there was a
tricky wind), but Town decided to keep the ball on the deck for most
of the game.
We tore them apart for the first 10 minutes, without scoring, and I was
beginning to worry that we might live to regret missed chances. Then a
Bournemouth corner dropped to Worthington on the edge of our box. He
set off and immediately bumped into Plastic Bertrand (Cherries' young
on-loan left back). No freekick given and Worthington emerged with the
ball. He proceeded to run the length of the field, accompanied only by
Brandon who made a decoy run off to the right. Lovely finish from
Worthington into the lefthand corner and the Town support went
bonkers. I seem to remember bellowing "Goal of the season!" in the
heat of the moment.
For most of the first half we seemed pretty much in control, and
although we didn't exactly pepper the Bournemouth goal with shots, we
had chances. As the half wore on, however, we started to get a bit
ragged. If it isn't physical tiredness maybe it's mental tiredness?
Anyway, we started giving the ball away cheaply and failing to clear
our lines. One such incident just before halftime led to the equalizer.
The second half was a bit more evenly balanced, but I still thought we
would have a chance to win it. Losing Worthington to what seemed like
an injury was a bit of a blow, especially since Matty Young didn't
seem to make any impression on the game. When Schofield came on he
immediately looked threatening (GTF, who he replaced, had looked our
most dangerous player up to that point). The winner was beautiful in
its simplicity - a break through the middle from Schofield, switched
out to Beckett on the righthand side, perfectly weighted ball back in
front of Schofield, keeper given no chance.
A great save from Glennon near the end, but they never really looked
like getting level.
Since my most recent memory of seeing Town was the awful Yeovil game
on TV, this came as a pleasant surprise. We still lack pace, and
occasionally exhibit a lack of organisation at the back. Otherwise, as
long as we keep the ball down and play a sensible formation, we're fine. By Martin Bridges from the HTFC mailing list. |
